About
Katie Matthews began working in the education field in 1997 as a classroom teacher in Wake County and also taught in Richmond City, VA and Watauga County. Katie pioneered Science PALS, an innovative STEM initiative linking primary learners with their intermediate and middle school peers for weekly scientific inquiries. This program emphasizes the cultivation of the 4 C’s: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Science PALS created opportunities to work with a variety of grade level teachers, administrators, schools and district personnel across North Carolina.
Most recently, Katie was a New Teacher Support Coach with Appalachian State, working with beginning teachers in the Northwest region and providing a variety of professional developments with partnering districts and NWRESA. She also co-chaired BT Summit, an annual conference held for BT’s at the Reich College of Education.
Katie is a National Board-Certified Teacher and was the recipient of the 2018 NC K-6 Presidential Award of Excellence in Math and Science Teaching and a 2015 Burroughs Wellcome Career Award in STEM Teaching awardee. Katie holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Masters of Arts in Education in Curriculum, Instruction and Supervision from UNC-Wilmington.
Katie and her husband, Jason are the proud parents of Hank and Mae and love spending time with their dogs, Molly and Dot. Time on the creek with family and friends, enjoying a great meal, and traveling to the town of Cape Charles, VA are things Katie always looks forward to doing in her spare time.
