  3. Young Eisner Scholars’ Summer Recap

Over the summer, YES scholars dove headfirst into a high-energy blend of academic activities, postsecondary preparation, and adventure. From tackling intensive test prep and exploring regional school campuses to mastering new skills at the July day camp, this season was jam-packed with growth and exploration.

Tuesdays were dedicated to test prep and a book club for both middle and high school scholars. Middle school read The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. High school scholars read a selection of essays from ‘This I Believe,’ before writing and recording their own essays.

Additionally, middle school students were exposed to the Independent Schools Entrance Exam (ISEE), while high school students looked at the four components of the ACT.

Also held on Tuesdays, and a highlight of this summer’s programming, was the optional soccer clinic that Appalachian State University Sociology intern, Luke, organized and facilitated.

On Thursdays, YES staff took students to visit various schools. Middle school focused on high school options which included NCSSM, Christ School, and Salem Academy. High School toured Washington & Lee University, ETSU, Wingate, and Lees-McRae. Students also briefly walked on the campus of UNC Charlotte.

In July, YES held their in-house day camp for rising 7th and 8th grade scholars on the Ashe campus of Wilkes Community College. Scholars stretched their thinking with logic puzzles, higher-level math, and portrait drawing, challenging both their analytical and creative abilities. They also learned the fundamentals of debate and explored the concept of positive deviance through activities led by Luke.

Ashe Early College CTE, History, and English teacher Mr. Stefan Kunz, returned this year to teach engaging classes in video editing and 3D printing. Scholars also tried their hand at the GloForge under the guidance of Mr. Kunz, using Adobe programs to design and create their own custom keychains and night lights.

The week was capped off with a memorable 3-hour kayaking adventure with RiverGirl in Todd, NC.

On July 30, YES held their 3rd Annual End-of-Summer Celebration. The celebration serves as a time for both middle school and high school scholars to gather with one another and their families to discuss the events and successes of the summer.

This year, scholars and their families enjoyed a delicious barbeque dinner while mingling and getting to know other YES families. YES alumni were invited to attend and share their college and post-grad experiences with current YES scholars.
